DEMONSTRATION OF THE NEUTRON COINCIDENCE COUNTER (NCC) IN A PROTOTYPE FAST BREEDER REACTOR
A demonstration of the Los Alamos Neutron Coincidence Counter (NCC) was carried out in a prototype fast breeder reactor. The work was part of the US - CEC Technical Exchange Programme. Collaborating in the exercise were staff from Los Alamos, IAEA, Euratom Luxembourg, Euratom Ispra and the operator. The demonstration is considered a good example of how new instruments can be field tested in close collaboration between developer, inspector and operator. The results of the measurements showed that the collar can be used to verify the operator's statement of the fuel loading for both HEU and MOX fuel. The measurement precision was about 1 % for counting times of 5 - 10 minutes. The paper will give the data evaluation performed for both types of fuel assemblies in view of the large 235-U values present in the MOX fuel and taking into account different fuel element geometries.
