Abstract

JRC Petten has designed, developed, and built a new hot cell facility for the remote encapsulation of pre- irradiated fast breeder reactor fuel pins. LMFBR pins with a maximum of 1600 mm overall length, with a certain burn-up accumulated in a fast breeder reactor, are assembled into a standard HFR irradiation capsule, which is then closed by two welds (double containment), filled with sodium or NaK, sealed and leak tested. The paper outlines the process of the remote encapsulation and the in-cell equipment.
