Abstract

The basic physics of electron cyclotron emission from magnetically confined plasmas is outlined. It is shown how this emission can be used as a tool for diagnosing such plasmas with particular reference to its use on tokamak plasmas. Diagnostic possibilities which exist for this emission on other plasmas such as mirrors and bumpy tori are also briefly considered. Finally, the characteristics of the emission expected from the next generation of large toroidal plasmas, e.g., JET, are outlined, and the diagnostic potential in this case is assessed.
