NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE VAPOUR FLOW IN CYLINDRICAL HEAT PIPES
The computer code AGATHE is described. It is intended to evaluate axially symmetric, vapour limited heat pipes with variable channel cross-section and compressible vapour flow at Mach numbers up to 1 and at all radial Reynolds numbers. Heat input and output is modelled by liquid coolant loops. The code can also be used to evaluate empirical factors describing turbulence. Results of pressure drop calculations in cylindrical evaporators with laminar flow are presented for a wide range of radial Reynolds numbers and Mach numbers. The choking limit is determined as a function of the radial Reynolds number. The validity of the boundary layer approximation is examined by comparison of different calculation methods and test data. No evidence precluding the use of this approximation could be found neither at high radial Reynolds number nor with back flow conditions.
