A DESCRIPTION OF AN ULTRA-HIGH VACUUM DEVICE FOR PERMEATION MEASUREMENTS
An UHV apparatus for the determination of permeabilities and diffusivities of deuterium through stainless steel membranes is described. The experimental methods and the corresponding numerical expressions for the evaluation of the experimental results are outlined. Calculations of the expected permeation fluxes have been performed and the results of some preliminary permeation flux measurements are reported. It follows from these results that the surface conditions of the membrane (oxide films) can significantly affect the value of the permeation fluxes. Finally, a bakeable device for the determination of absolute deuterium pressures in the range 0-50 Torr is described.
