Abstract

A gridded ionization chamber has been constructed with the aim of determining its ultimate energy resolution in alpha spectroscopy, utilizing a cooled FET pre- amplifier of the type normally employed with semiconductor detectors. With suitable mechanical collimation of the alpha particles, their fine structure has been measured with an energy resolution of +- 11.5 keV (fwhm), achieved using an Ar + 0.75 % C-2H-2 mixture as the filling gas.
