TESTING, EVALUATION AND SHALLOW LAND BURIAL OF LOW AND MEDIUM RADIOACTIVE WASTE FORMS
In view of the increasing importance of studies on the characterization and evaluation of low and medium activity waste forms, this work has been concentrated in a separate action of the Communities R & D programme on radioactive wastes. Current investigations concentrate on the testing of the more common industrial waste forms obtained by fixation of reactor and reprocessing concentrates, sludges and ion exchange resins in bitumen, cement, polymer resins and slagging incinerator granules. In order to allow comparison, ten reference waste compositions were chosen. A coordinated test programme is being carried out on these reference waste forms and on six other variants to examine such aspects: - effects of waste composition, - radiation damage and radiolysis, - leaching behaviour of real and simulant waste forms, - thermal, climatic, microbiologic degradation, etc. The seminar reported the first results of these studies and concluded with presentations on experience with, and the long-term performance of, shallow land burial.
