NEUTRON POWDER DIFFRACTION STUDY OF 239-PUD-X
A neutron powder diffraction study has been carried out on several deuterides of plutonium (PuD-2.25, PuD-2.65) to determine the positions of deuterium atoms in the host metal f.c.c. lattice. It has been found that vacancies occur in the tetrahedral sites. Moreover with increasing deuterium concentration, octahedral interstitial deuterium atoms are displaced from their ideal positions. These results can be explained by the formation of clusters. Finally at low temperature, these compounds become ferromagnetically ordered. An ordered magnetic moment mu-o approximately equal to 0.8 mu-B has been measured on all compounds.
