Abstract

A variational principle is suggested that describes the partially relaxed equilibrium state of a slightly imperfect finite beta plasma. Under the assumption of a multiple time scale ordering, the potential energy of the plasma is minimized, subject to a few global constraints and the pressure balance equation as a local constraint. Application of the principle to various types of high and low-beta experiments shows satisfactory agreement of the predictions with the experimental results.
