Abstract

A very crude modelling of temperature profiles in diverted tokamaks, coupled with simple energy balance considerations, leads to an equation for the energy balance in the edge region which admits two solutions, very reminiscent of L and H modes. Some implications for future machines are discussed. Comparison with ASDEX experimental data shows that the predicted radiation level is higher than observed. A very tentative discussion of possible anomalous transport mechanisms is presented, suggesting further experimental measurements.
