Abstract

The solubility of protium and deuterium in Inconel 600 has been investigated in the temperature range from 400 degrees C to 650 degrees C and in the pressure range from 1 mbar to 1000 mbar. The validity of Sieverts' law has been confirmed by several measurements at 570 degrees C and at loading pressures from 1 to 1000 mbar. The temperature dependence of solubility of protium S-H and deuterium S-D in Inconel 600 can be presented by Arrhenius plots. The H atom vibration frequency v in Inconel 600 has been determined from the isotope effect in solubility by application of quantum-statistical partition functions of the harmonic oscillator to the solution process: THETA + z < hv/k + z < 1250 K +- 120 K. Using this characteristic temperature THETA of vibrations of interstitially solved hydrogen in Inconel 600, the solubility of tritium S-T has been calculated.
