Abstract

The work carried out in this study has given preliminary process development information on the aqueous route for the conversion of Zircaloy to an inert material. The basic feasibility of the individual process steps has been established and demonstrated inactively at the pilot plant (25 kg Zircaloy) scale. Additionally, two samples of irradiated PWR fuel cladding have been processed to the hydrous oxide, which has then been immobilized by both hot pressing and incorporation in cement The present work has involved only limited studies on active Zircaloy and the fate, within the total process scheme, of all active species has not yet been established. It is strongly recommended that the fully active studies (at small scale) should be extended substantially prior to any pursuit of the conversion process at a larger scale of inactive operation.
