Abstract

The energy of a Vlasov wave packet is calculated using a rigorous solution of the initial value problem to second order in the wave amplitude. A precursor is found which carries part of the energy at the phase velocity. Energy conservation is derived. The relation of the wave energy with the slowly varying second order field, and with the dielectric function is discussed.
