ALTERATIONS OF CONDUCTIVITY AND STRUCTURE OF ZIRCONIA BASE ELECTROLYTES UNDER HIGH ELECTRIC FIELDS
The flow of current through a cell having a zirconia base electrolyte may result in a depletion of the oxygen chemical potential at the cathodic interface to levels that are not compatible with the preservation of a pure oxygen ion conductivity. The system tends to react to the relevant increase of the electrical potential by means of a direct injection of electrons and with irreversible alterations of the electrolyte structure.
