Abstract

High resolution UV photoemission spectroscopy of the conduction band as well as X-ray photoemission spectroscopy of the 4f core levels of the intermetallic uranium Laves phases UAl-2, UCo-2, and UFe-2 are reported. Quantitative comparison of the emission in the conduction band by normalization of He II excited spectra to constant U6p-3/2 emission reveals an increasing 5f contribution at E-F going from UFe-2, to UCo-2, and to UAl-2. All intermetallics do not show final state multipets thus establishing the itinerant character of the 5f electrons with increasing localization from UFe-2, to UAl-2. This increasing localization is also seen in the U4f core level spectra showing a satellite on the high binding energy side, which is attributed to poor screening of the 4f core level and is found to be most intense for UAl-2.
