Abstract

The work presented is related to the development of thermochemical water splitting cycles at the Joint Research Centre of the Commission of the European Communities, and represents the issue of a specific contractual research of the Energy R&D Programme of the Commission. The results presented are a follow-on of previous measurements of vapour - liquid equilibrium of the sulphuric acid - water system and of SO-2 - O-2 mass transfer coefficient and equilibrium solubilities in water (report EUR 7042). The present measurements have been extended to equilibrium of the sulphuric acid - water system in the presence of air as inert system, reported in the first part of the report and to the solubility and mass transfer of SO-2 - O-2 mixtures in presence of nitrogen as diluent in water and in diluted sulphuric acid, described in the second part of the report. The first set of measurements were performed in the temperature range 290-410 degrees C at a total pressure of 4 MPA AND WITH DIFFERENT H-2SO-4 CONCENTRATIONS. THE measurement methods and apparatus are discussed. An extensive comparison with the results of other authors and an exhaustive discussion are presented. The second set of measurements were performed in the temperature range 30-50 degrees C at 5 MPa total gas pressure, the gas phase being SO-2, O-2 and water vapour for a range of composition of the gas phase, the liquid phase being water or diluted sulphuric acid. The apparatus and measurements methods are described, the results are reported and discussed in details with reference to the existing literature on the subject.
