THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOLAR ARCHITECTURE
The Commission of the European Communities has a long standing involvement with energy R, D and D, and an important part of this is concerned with the passive utilization of solar energy in buildings. The techniques and technologies involved with this field have a considerable energy saving potential and the work undertaken in the last few years covers a broad range of topics, with the overall aim of providing the architects or engineers with the means to apply these techniques: overall assessments of the merits of different concepts, the development and/or selection of suitable design aids, computer models etc., the development of common test and performance monitoring methods, and the development of optimized and reliable components for buildings. The results of the work carried out had strongly influenced the content of the next Community R & D programme, the approval of which is expected soon. This new programme will include, amongst other items, the development of test cells for passive solar components and investigations on many general subjects whichmight enhance the further use of solar architecture.
