Abstract

The objectives of the Education and Training activities of the Joint Research Centre will be reviewed as they have developed during the past ten years. Although specific courses in remote sensing have been organized in the previous decade, it was only in 1980 that a systematic programme was organized. A Remote Sensing Education Laboratory was established and provided the digital image processing support essential for the courses of 1980 - 1983. In addition to lecture and seminar courses, it was considered that a short practical summer school would be most valuable to its participants if based on field traversing and sampling in association with interactive digital image processing of related satellite data. Using the local region in Lombardy and Piedmont as a field area, a programme of geomorphological, land use and crop mapping was undertaken in the field and ancillary information was extracted from previous survey, and census programme results. Appropriate Landsat data and imagery were used in various formats and an aircraft sampling traverse was flown to obtain appropriate air photography. This was associated with a ground data sampling programme and both coincided with a Landsat overpass. Course practical exercises, based on these preliminary sources of data and information and digital image processing, provided a framework for group discussion and for the evaluation by each participant of the place and value of remote sensing for land use inventories. Three such Summer Schools were presented in 1982, 1983 and 1984. An evaluation of the methodology by an independent referee will be summarized.
