Abstract

We have studied the distribution of tritium in Mytilus edulis, a species which is found along the coasts as well as in estuaries, and in two freshwater mussels (Anodonta< sp. and Dreissena polymorpha) collected in the Maas river. Marine and freshwater mussels were fed with microalgae (Chlamydomonas reinhardii) labelled with tritiated water (HTO) or with a tritiated amino acid ('H-leucine). The distribution of tritium in the mussels was then investigated by dissecting the animals and by measuring the radioactivity (by micro-incineration in the Biological Material Oxidizer) present in the different organs (foot, labial palps, gills, mantle, byssus retractor, hepatopancreas, posterior adductor, anterior adductor). Since the hepatopancreas was found to contain the highest radioactivity concentration, tritium distribution in this organ was more deeply investigated. Hepatopancreas extracts were submitted to column chromatography analysis and the aluted substances were further investigated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The results suggest the presence of tritium in proteins and other macromolecules as well as in compounds having a low molecular weight (soluble in cold 10 % trichloroacetic acid). Experiments with Mytilus edulis and Dreissena polymorpha showed that no biomagnification of tritium occurred through the experimental food chain.
