Abstract

The replacement of the reactor vessel of a research reactor offers both an incentive and an opportunity to investigate ways to improve the performance of the reactor with special emphasis on the conditions prevailing for neutron beam scattering experiments. A series of reflector configurations has been studied at the R2-O research reactor at Studsvik with respect to the relation between the flux density in the reflector and the neutron current in the beam tube and to the ratio of thermal to fast neutrons. Light water, heavy water and Be were chosen as reflector materials to be investigated, with due attention to the actual and possible future configuration of the HFR, Petten and the R-2, Studsvik, where reactor vessel replacement has just been completed or is in progress, respectively. The experiments have been designed to reveal the dependence of the flux density on such parameters as depth and width of the D-2O reflector, width of the reentrant beam tube and on the effect of Be layer present inside or outside the core. Flux density levels in the reactor, the H-2O and D-2O reflector, and the beam have been monitored by activation of Co wires, stacks of different metal foils and gold foils, respectively. In the paper a complete description of the details of the experimental set-up is presented together with the evaluation of the data. Conclusions regarding reflector optimization are drawn. Calculations are presently underway and it is hoped that these results will be used to develop and test reactor codes to describe the behaviour on the periphery of reactor cores. Such codes would be of general interest for their prediction of optimum reflector configuration in high flux reactors for beam research.
