MODELLING STUDIES ON LAKE EUTROPHICATION IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE WATER QUALITY PROJECT AT JRC ISPRA
This paper is a survey of modelling work carried out at JRC Ispra in the framework of ecological studies on Lake Lugano. Three topics of particular concern for deep eutrophicated lakes have been treated: - the water mean residence time was evaluated for the meromictic (northern) part of the lake and for the holomictic (southern) one: it was concluded that a factor - 10 exists between the two times (+- 30 and +- 3 years, respectively), the renewal time of the lake as a whole being a sort of space averaged value (+- 14 years). - The phosphate phosphorus flux from bottom sediment during the summer stagnation (when anoxic conditions exist in the deepest layers) was assessed by means of a correlation method between field experiments and ecological model, applied to the Ponte Tresa basin, where a careful evaluation of the phosphorus inputs is normally possible. - An extension of the same procedure was utilized in order to identify the role of the organic dissolved phosphorus form in determining the phosphorus turnover time in the epilimnetic layers of the Agno bay, which receives the depurated waste waters of Lugano town, i.e. the greatest part of the effluents to Lake Lugano. The discussion of the three problems is preceded by a short presentation of the eutrophication model, and followed by an example of use of the model as a predictive tool.
