Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The study executed by the Italian working group mainly consists of the preparation of specific maps covering the whole of Italy, as a part of the map of Europe, and of more detailed maps, cross-sections and graphs illustrating the different and complex conditions of the high temperature areas and of their various geothermal fields which currently are under exploitation, experimentation or exploration. This synthesis of data which is by far more exhaustive than the previous ones and which includes also the almost complete basic information resulting from the hydrocarbon exploration carried out by AGIP and private companies, is adequate for a general evaluation of the geothermal potential in terms of selection of the preferential areas for high temperature and/or medium low temperature resources. A quantitative evaluation, on the contrary, is seldom possible at this stage, even for the better known geothermal fields which have been producing for ten years and where the recent changes of the exploitation techniques (e.g. reinjection) and the finding of additional reservoirs (by deep drilling) originates conditions for which there is neither a sufficiently large case history nor the experience of a long period of operation.
