Abstract

Over the past years the Radiation Protection Programme of the Commission of the European Communities attached increasing importance to the problem of natural radioactivity. A series of seminars, with aims fitting a sequence from risk assessment up to risk management, was organised. The paper outlines the necessary steps to develop a realistic policy of controlling exposure to natural radiation, giving due consideration to the socioeconomic consequences of policy implementation.
