Abstract

The development of modern information systems is based upon the availability of proprietary computer software products such as a database management systems, query languages, data dictionaries and data protection mechanisms. This paper outlines the experiences gained with such products at the Euratom Safeguards Directorate. Some general technical questions are examined (database design, analysis techniques, programming methodology) and the problem of data protection, being of particular relevance in the context of safeguards, is discussed in some detail. Finally a brief description is provided of the Directorate of Euratom Safeguards Information Retrieval Environment (DESIRE), developed with the aid of the software mentioned.
