Abstract

The ponderomotive force acting on a magnetized plasma due to an rf electric field is studied. It is shown that to obtain agreement between theory and the experimental results the collective interaction of the fluid with the rf field must be taken into account. This collective behaviour manifests itself in the perpendicular ponderomotive force by the rf induced magnetization current with the magnetic field. The origin of the difference in results predicted by the single particle and fluid approaches is clarified.
