Abstract

This Colour Atlas of Mesothelioma has been written and illustrated by pathologists for their fellow pathologists in the hope that this information will be of help in making the pathological diagnosis of diffuse malignant mesothelioma. A mesothelioma is a neoplasm of the mesothelium. The mesothelium is the cellular lining of the original coelomic cavities, including their derivates and remnants. From a practical point of view, it is the mesotheliomas of the greater serosal cavities that are of major importance, but they all take a natural place within the limits of this atlas. Although the atlas is mainly devoted to diffuse malignant mesothelioma of the pleura, peritoneum and percardium, other forms of mesothelioma are dealt with briefly. Apart from the systematic text and ilustrations, case reports have been used to highlight some of the problems in diagnosis and, and as many countries now have Mesothelioma Panels, information on these Panels and on their aims has been included. As it is recognized that the pathogenesis and diagnostic developments will be especially liable to review in future years, these subjects have been kept deliberately short.
