Abstract

Synthetic uranium isotope mixtures were prepared with 235-U/238-U ratios known to uncertainties of < 0.01 % for use in the certification of Uranium Isotopic Reference Materials. The experimental work can be divided into 5 parts: a) determination of the absolute isotopic enrichment of the starting materials b) purification of the isotopically enriched materials c) calcination of the two isotopically enriched U-3O-8 materials for reproducible oxygen to metal ratio d) determination of the chemical purity of the starting materials by spark source mass spectrometry e) weighing of the starting materials under dry air and blending into accurately known isotope mixtures. A full orthodox data evaluation was performed on the 2s uncertainties of the synthetic isotope mixtures and of the components of these uncertainties. The application of this approach to the certification of 235-Uranium Isotope Abundance Reference Materials for Gamma-Spectrometry (EC Nuclear Reference Material 171) is described.
