METHODS FOR CALIBRATION CURVE ESTIMATION FOR POISSONIAN MEASUREMENTS WHEN THE CURVE IS A POWER FUNCTION
This paper describes five methods of curve fitting for the calibration of the Phonid Instrument. The estimation problem goes beyond the scope of classical methods because of the presence of shared errors, the heteroscedasticity of the errors and the power function form of the regression. The methods described are modified versions of ordinary least squares estimation, Kautchkoff estimation, constrained least squares estimation, Wald estimation and Theil estimation. For each method the paper gives Taylor series approximations to the variance and bias of the calibration curve power parameter. The methods are contrasted in terms of a numerical example.
