ON THE TECHNOLOGY OF FUSION REACTORS
The principle of a fusion reactor based on magnetic confinement is outlined and the relative merits of fusion as an energy source are illustrated in the introductory chapter. This is followed by a discussion of the D-T fuel cycle, with numerical examples of fuel consumption and tritium breeding performances. After introducing the basic ideas and technologies of Tokamak confinement in the next chapter, the main nuclear technologies of fusion - tritium technology, blanket technology, and materials technology - are discussed in some detail, illustrating in some instances the phenomenological discussion by numerical examples. No final conclusions are drawn from this more didactical than scientific presentation; but, instead, a short overview is given at the end on the European fusion technology effort.
