Abstract

The shape of the electron cyclotron absorption profile is discussed for the first harmonic of both the ordinary and extraordinary mode and for an arbitrary angle of propagation in a Maxwellian plasma. As expected, these profiles have a single peak in all cases. For the extraordinary mode, even at angles of propagation close to perpendicular with respect to the magnetic field, the absorption profile can be affected by the influence of the upper hybrid resonance on the wave polarization.
