FARM ANIMAL WELFARE PROGRAMME - EVALUATION REPORT 1979 - 1983
This report details and evaluates the initial four years (1979 - 1983) of the farm animal welfare programme, a scientific and technical examination, as part of the second EEC coordinated agricultural research programme. The report is in two parts: CEC farm animal welfare coordination programme and common programme respectively. The coordination programme has contributed, via a series of scientific meetings, to a consensus of opinion concerning the nature of the problems and possible ways forward (intensive production systems, importance of "disturbed behaviour" as indicator of inadequate welfare, welfare risks during transportation, preslaughter handling and slaughter). A considerable level of agreement was achieved, and the programme is the mainspring for identification and development of the common programme. Due to limited funds, research projects were restricted to poultry welfare; good results were obtained whilst commercial usefulness was taken into account, and the Council of Europe's Convention on the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes abided by.
