ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Highlights are given on the involvement of the Commission of the European Communities in the development of a specialised information market. As a follow-up to Euronet, user-friendly information access systems and electronic publishing and delivery services (in particular 10 "DOCDEL" experiments) are being encouraged. The delivery of documents via satellite ("APOLLO") is in preparation. The 5-year action programme of DG XIII of the CEC for the development of the specialised information market concentrates on patent information, materials data banks, biotechnology information, electronic regional discrepancies. The trilateral agreement between the European, US and Japanese Patent Offices will have a great impact on the handling of full text information. In this context a European Document Processing Centre will have some importance. The CEC intends to support in 1985 the application of CD-ROMs for information services. In the longer term numerical and factual data banks will be needed as a basis for query answering systems.
