Some methods were tested in order to locate faults under thin quaternary cover and to check their hydrothermal heat flow: geoelectrical profilings and temperature measurements in shallow boreholes were successfully used to identify a morphologically non-visible quaternary active fault near Edenkoben (Palatinate). Many geothermal anomalies are controlled by young shear zones. After intensive mapping of the surface structures the degree of fracturing in the basement can be found out by special tectonic investigations, supported by geophysical measurements. High degree of subsurface fracturing and the existence of joint and pore aquifers are the basic hints for a geothermal anomaly. In the Palatinate and northern Alsace a tight microseismic observation net should be installed, to locate active ruptures at greater depths. The net should be set up in various areas where quaternary active faults in sand- and gravel pits show neotectonic activity. Microseismic observations could be used to locate the hydrothermal active ruptures in the basement of Buechelberg and therefore to narrow the area of possible drilling points.
