POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF FLOW CYTOMETRY IN THE AQUATIC SCIENCES - A REVIEW
Flow cytometry, a powerful new technique for the study of cell populations in a fast automated way, and especially suitable for fields of study which require frequent analysis of large numbers of cells, will become an important analytical tool in water quality control too. It will facilitate the rapid analysis of large numbers of phytoplankton. It may also be possible to use it to analyse bacteria and protozoa. Species composition, size distribution and age structure may be deducted. Chlorophylla, DNA and RNA may be measured on a cell by cell basis. Flow cytometry will create a new sphere of study in the aquatic sciences.
