THE USE OF A HIGH TEMPERATURE HEAT PUMP TO RECYCLE ENERGY FROM PAPER PULP EFFLUENT
The production of paper pulp using the thermomechanical process has a high electricity consumption. Generally, the refiners consume 1,800 kWh per ton of pulp; 90% of this energy is transformed into heat during the process and is exhausted in the form of dirty steam. The aim of the project was to demonstrate the possibilities of using a system to recover heat from the dirty steam. A particularly interesting aspect of this project is the use of an electric water ring compressor for the compression of clean steam, produced by the condensation of dirty steam. The report contains the description of the installation and its construction. The experience with the plant and the resulting energy saving during the demonstration period are described as well as the commercial viability and prospects.
