Abstract

The characteristics of the modified Hopkinson bar with prestressed bar loading device are compared with those of similar devices. A further modification is presented consisting in coupling two equal prestressed bar loading systems, which permit to apply to the specimen two symmetric tension waves. A simplified analysis of the wave propagation in this last case is given. A large dynamic testing facility is described, having a loading capability of 5 MN, based on the two symmetric tension waves system. Progress in dynamic tensile testing of large specimens is reported.
