TOWARDS THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE INFORMATION MARKET
The development of advanced information services in the European Community is lagging far behind the United States. However, during the last twelve months, important initiatives have been taken at European level which will contribute to the creation of a more favourable environment for the development of the information market: + gradual implementation of a Community policy in the field of telecommunications, + adoption of a five-year plan for the development of the specialized information market, + approval by the European Council of heads of State or Government of the achievement of the information market as a specific goal. The definition of a Community Information market policy is complex and will take time. Those involved in the information market should also, at their level, participate in the construction of Europe by being attentive to trends in the development of the market at Community level and by preparing the kind of European cooperation needed to meet the challenge of the future.
