Riassunto

The main analytical technique for human samples is neutron activation analysis (NAA). It consists of irradiating the material to be analyzed in a nuclear reactor and measuring the induced radioactivity of the isotopes. In practice the amount of certain material is calculated from the ratio of the radioactive isotope in the sample to that of a standard. NAA is essentially a multi-element method, offering a high sensitivity for several elements. Depending on the concentration of the elements investigated and the nuclear characteristics of the radioisotopes formed, NAA is either a purely instrumental method, or it can require radiochemical separations.
