Abstract

The river Po's drainage basin includes almost all of Northern Italy, a territory with a high degree of urbanizatiion, industrialization and agricultural activities. The quality of the Northern Adriatic coastal waters is strongly affected by the P loads coming from the river Po, which determine highly eutrophic conditions. P loads from different sources were quantified both through experimental data and theoretical evaluations. The development and the application of a simple model, able to describe the fate (diffusion and biological utilization) of nutrients in sea water allow us to predict changes in the water quality which derive from different P reduction scenarios in the river Po's drainage basin. Costs and benefits of different P control strategies are also presented.
