Abstract

A new machine of the well known PHONID series is presented together with the first laboratory measurement results. The features of this device are quite new. The main objective of this design is to build a very small and light machine to cope with the assessment of a great many samples of small dimensions. The measuring cavity can accommodate samples up to 12 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height, but, if top and bottom end pieces are removed, long fuel elements can be placed through the machine. PHONID 4 weighs about 200 kg but can be broken down into about twenty main pieces of less than 20 kg each. The electronics is also quite compact and light consisting of a portable 6 module mini NIM and integrated amplification chains are directly mounted on the detectors.
