FIELD TEST AND CALIBRATION OF THE HLNCC-II FOR HIGH BURN-UP PLUTONIUM SAMPLES
Neutron measurements were performed with a new high performance neutron coincidence counter (HLNCC-II) on 9 high burn-up plutonium samples. The mass range of the high burn-up PuO-2 samples was 1.5 - 2.8 kg plutonium. In addition measurements were performed on a number of medium and low burn-up PuO-2 samples as well as uranium - plutonium mixtures. Measured total rates in excess of 400,000 counts/s were observed. A multiplication corrected calibration curve was established for PuO-2 in the mass range up to 2.8 kg plutonium (240-Pu effective mass up to 1 kg). It was shown that the multiplication correction performed well provided the moisture content of the samples was less than a few thousand p.p.m. Experience, to date, indicates, that the HLNCC-II system, including the multiplication correction, is appropriate for measuring the 240-Pu effective mass over a large range of sample sizes.
