POSITIONAL STABILITY OF A HIGHLY ELONGATED TOKAMAK PLASMA IN A CONDUCTING SHELL
It is shown that start-up scenarios for highly elongated tokamaks can be found such that all intermediate states are stable against axisymmetric, ideal MHD modes. These scenarios are characterized by broad current profiles (FWHM about 80% of the horizontal plasma diameter) and close lateral walls (plasma-wall distance less than 25% of the horizontal minor radium.
