Riassunto

In this article some aspects related to trace elements and their possible implications on human health are discussed. Some elements are essential to the organism at levels of milligrams or few micrograms per day. However, their marginal or pronounced deficiencies in humans or an excessive exposure can cause adverse health effects (dose effects relationships). There is a great need to protect the health of general population and workers at risk of inadequate exposure to trace elements (health protection and environmental quality standards). In this context, the scientific degree on which health protection would be based will depend on a proper analytical support and the close cooperation between biochemists and environmentalists with analytical chemists.
