Abstract

The CEC has partially funded related studies on the in-situ leaching of low grade ore at the Warren Spring Laboratory (WSL) in the UK, the Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) in France and the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards (IIRS) in Ireland. Residual pyritic copper - zinc ore, with potential opportunities for using the in-situ bleaching method, exists at the Avoca Mine (Ireland); this ore was used in all three studies. Percolation column leaching tests on a 3 kg scale have been carried out at WSL, a 7 t pilot scale test at BRGM and at the Avoca Mine now being leached within the mine. Modelling studies have been undertaken by WSL and so far generalised models have been evaluated using leaching data from both the 3 kg and the 7 t pilot scale tests. Modelling of leaching data from the 6000 t in-situ operation at Avoca may follow. Leaching data for other ores are now being modelled, and attempts made to synthesize and leach ores with controlled mineralogy in order to relate model parameters to the ore structure.
