DIRECT LEACHING OF COMPLEX PYRITIC ORES WITH SELECTIVE DISSOLUTION OF THE NON-FERROUS METALS
B.R.G.M. and Minemet Recherche are investigating direct leaching of complex pyritic ores with the object to define a process which permits the selective dissolution of Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag. Experimental work realized concerns the dissolution of sphalerite and transformation of the galena in anglesite in acidic sulfate medium oxidation (ferric ions and oxygen). The conditions of best effectiveness and selectivity of these two reactions compared to a minimum dissolution of the chalcopyrite later to be investigated. Lead will be leached by percolation of a concentrated solution of sodium chloride. So far laboratory column leachings have been carried out on the complex sulfide ores of Bodennec by an acidic ferric and ferrous sulfate solution. The kinetics of the leachings of zinc and copper are followed whereas potential of solution and pH are maintained constant. An automatic data acquisition system measures electrochemical potential and pH. It is intended to study the influence of: potential of solution, concentration of the oxidants, pH, size of solid particles, and composition of the ore, on the kinetics and the selectivity of the leachings. Then, the best way of direct leaching in sulfate and in chloride medium will be defined.
