Riassunto

Neutron activation (NAA) is a nuclear technique for the detection and measurement of trace elements. It is a particularly effective method when applied to biological materials because of its high sensitivity to many elements, the multielement character and the absence of matrix effects. The aims of this paper are: 1) to report some basic principles of NAA; 2) to describe the sequential steps of either instrumental analysis (INAA) or when the analysis includes radiochemical separations (RSNAA); 3) to outline some typical applications for environmental and toxicological studies carried out in the context of the project "Heavy Metal Pollution" at the JRC Ispra.
