Résumé

This report concludes our study concerning an alkaline fuel cell with matrix. Tests to make electrodes directly on the matrix were not successful: the best way to realize the fuel cell is to build electrodes and matrix separately. The electrodes are made with a novel structure: a foam of nickel with a layer of nickel Mond. Good electrical conductivity and excellent catalyst adhesion to the current collector are obtained. To lower the price of the fuel cell in view of an E.V. application, no precious catalysts are used: Raney nickel and silvered carbon. Air cathode performances are improved by introducing some silver in the Mond layer. The matrix is preferably composed of a plastic felt (such as NORDLYS) and a porous polypropylene sheet (as CELGARD 3501): so high bubble point, low electrical resistivity and high electrolyte retention are obtained. With our fuel cell, 2500 h test under 150 mA/cm2 and at 80 degrees C temperature are obtained. A technico-economic study shows that, in these conditions the fuel cell cannot be used for the E.V., because of the very low price of energy required (300 FF/kW).
