Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of a seminar in the EEC Programme of Coordination of Research on Plant Productivity, held at Wye College, 9-13 April, 1984. The central theme of this book is that with the establishment of cytogenetic studies in Vicia faba understanding of its genetic system will develop in relation to breeding improvement and thereafter some at least of the impediments to yield increase can be removed. The longer papers (with abstracts) and shorter contributions relate to topics: intact and broken chromosomes; trisomics and linkage; disease resistance; population (genetics); interspecies hybridization; haploidy; and mutant physiology. At the concluding session of the seminar three resolutions were formed: 1. The recommendations of the Sutton Bonington General Review Meeting were endorsed especially the priority given to cytogenetics. 2. There should be continuing emphasis in the Vicia faba research programme to establish linkage groups on each chromosome which could then be individually researched. 3. Intensive efforts into in vitro techniques in Vicia faba to be supported. and it was stated that at a future meeting, the emphases were to be for: 1) Chromosome research and genetics of Vicia faba; 2) Breeding research in Vicia faba; 3) Protein metabolism and genetic engineering; and 4) Germplasm resources of Vicia faba.
