Abstract

The present report describes the work performed by the National Coal Board under research contract EHC-51-018-UK. The objectives of the project have been to develop the NCB's flowsheeting computer program to permit the evaluation of direct liquefaction processes using hydrogen, and to compare the manufacture of hydrogen from coal with that of other synthetic fuels. In particular the following developments and applications of the ARACHNE flowsheeting package have been made: a new version of the ARACHNE package (version 5) has been written and tested; a capital costing package, IDMON, has been developed as a companion to ARACHNE; twelve coal conversion processes based on coal gasification have been studied. Processes for the production of hydrogen, methanol, ammonia and gasoline from each of Texaco, Shell and BGC/Lurgi gasifiers have been simulated using ARACHNE and costed using IDMON. ARACHNE and IDMON constitute a flexible tool for technical and economic appraisals of chemical engineering processes. Appendices are provided: User guides to ARACHNE and IDMON; direct liquefaction simulation details; references for capital cost database; the ARACHNE 4 package; gasification study; models and details.
