WASTE MANAGEMENT IN REPROCESSING PLANTS
This study comprises a discussion and a cost estimate of the methods known so far and the potential concepts for the treatment of medium level aqueous waste solutions up to the point of conditioning and repository storage. This survey is followed by an outline of the development of future strategy incorporating two possible concepts of treatment: + improvement and optimization of the procedure as practized so far, and: + development and introduction of new methods, both in the reprocessing step and in the treatment and conditioning of waste solutions. (The former approach of separating medium level concentrates into one high level and one low level waste stream results in a major reduction of the waste volumes; the second approach is meant to eliminate completely the category of medium level waste solutions by making use of new process chemicals and new decontaminating agents.) The study ends with a description of the research and development activities necessary to realize the concepts indicated in the study: + improvement of the methods of waste treatment and conditioning; + development of reprocessing techniques (reduction of salt content); + development of a remotely operated module technique; + ultimate storage of conditioned wastes.
